Healing Collective Trauma Through Ancestral Practices: What Advocates and Professionals Need to Know About Psychedelic Therapies, Client Agency, and the Reintegration of Ancestral Healing as Alternative PTSD Treatment in the Black Community.


This training is designed to expand community awareness and equip mental health advocates and professionals with the knowledge and skills to better support clients integrating traditional and/or ancestral healing practices into their mental wellness journey.


This session will explore client agency, cultural competence and humility, ethical considerations for supporting culturally specific healing practices within Western Therapeutic Models and harm reduction strategies - through the lens of a Board Certified Psychiatrist, a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician, Director of Spiritual Health at Emory University Hospital Midtown, as well as, a Ancestral Lineage Healing Practitioner.


Participants will:

  • Increase knowledge and understanding of ancestral/traditional healing practices and how historical trauma has impacted its practice in black family systems.

  • Increase knowledge and understanding of current evidenced base research utilizing ancestral/traditional healing practices for black individuals, couples and families experiencing PTSD. 

  • Increase understanding and support of individuals, couples and families re-embodying ancestral/traditional healing practices to reduce harm.
